The alignment and orientation of your teeth are ideally meant to maximize oral function as well as give you an appealing smile. If minor alignment issues go uncorrected, it can leave you feeling self-conscious about your appearance and it can put you at increased risk of dental issues, like enamel attrition.

To correct minor variances in your teeth and prevent dental attrition, our dentists, Dr. F. Todd Wortham and Dr. Seth Jorgensen. might be able to fit you for Invisalign® at his clinic in Valdez, Alaska. These are clear, plastic aligners that are custom matched to the contours of your teeth. Every two weeks, you will need to switch out to a new set, which will firmly move your teeth closer to their ideal orientation.

The process starts with a thorough examination of your teeth. This assures the overall health of your mouth and helps define your alignment goals. This will also determine the number of custom aligners needed to restore the alignment of your smile.

Our dentist will then prepare an impression of your teeth. This will be sent to the Invisalign laboratory where the custom aligner trays will be produced.

You will need to wear the aligners in your mouth for 20 to 22 hours per day to maximize the effect and minimize the duration of the correction. Each set of aligners is designed to gradually stretch the periodontal ligaments anchoring your teeth, gradually repositioning them a little bit closer to your ideal smile.

You can drink normally when the Invisalign aligners are in your mouth. However, you will need to remove them before eating. It’s best to avoid smoking or chewing gum while the aligners are in your mouth as this could potentially damage the aligners. You should try to keep the custom aligners in the case provided when you’re not wearing them.

You might need to use a removable, clear, plastic retainer for a few weeks after your final alignment has been achieved. This will help hold your teeth in their new alignment while the minor tension in your periodontal ligaments subsides.
